The little hamlet of Butterley, nestled in the fields of Derbyshire, is famous for three things. The Company, the reservoir, and the railway. In 1790 the Company was founded as 'Benjamin Outram and Company'. It soon became the Butterley Company producing iron.

With the outbreak of the French Revolutionary Wars production stepped up and the Company went from strength to strength. In 1817 the Pentrich Rebellion started at the works and ended at the office of the factory agent.

Construction was world renowned from St Pancras to Vauxhall Bridge, the Falkirk Wheel to the Emirates Spinnaker Tower. In 2009, following the banking crisis, the Company folded.

The reservoir was constructed to provide water for the Cromford Canal on behalf of The Company. The canal fell into decline and all but 5 miles are derelict.

The railway remains. The Midland Railway - Butterley is a thriving little venture that still runs a range of engines. The signal box at Butterley originally came from Ais Gill on the Settle to Carlisle line.
