Autumn colours in the churchyard of The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Huish Episcopi near Langport, Somerset.
The church dates from the 12th century, although the actual building that remains was constructed in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. In keeping with the buildings across this part of Somerset, the church is built from blue lias with some ham stone for the arches and decorations.
I went to school in the building across the road from the church. My mother worked in the convent school around the corner in nearby Langport (which is joined to Huish Episcopi). Walking past the church I used to like spotting the various hunky punks that were put on all the churches in the area. Can you see any?
For those who do not know, a gargoyle is a figure with a spout to get rid of water. The hunky punk has no spout...it is just for decoration!
I revisited the church in autumn. After a wet start the sun came out and beautiful yellow sunlight struck the church lighting it up like a beacon. The graveyard was rather untidy and so it took me over an hour to find a spot that gave a nice composition.
I have always been fascinated by the number of crows in the area. This day was no exception and they swirled around in great clouds above the tall trees behind the church.
