Light from Heaven - Rutland Water

The sunken church at Rutland Water is one of the most famous landmarks of this little county nestled in the heart of England.

Normanton Church was saved after an outcry by members of the local community when Normanton itself was flooded to create Rutland Water.

The church itself is St Matthews and was the parish church until the early 1700s when the village was largely demolished to make way for the creation an estate for the Heathcote Baronets.

The church was improved in 1826 with a new tower to replace the 14th century derelict one. The tower was designed as a replica of a tower of St. John’s concert hall in Smith Square, London. Various other additions and improvements were made at the same time.

In the early 20th century the estate was broken up and the church was abandoned until the new reservoir was created.
